Fire burns down Mankwe hide in Pilanesberg National Park

A devastating fire has swept through the Pilanesberg National Park, destroying the Mankwe hide.

According to Latest Sightings Pilanesberg Bakubang, one of the resorts bordering the park, has alerted its guests that the park’s gates will be closed for today.

It is unclear how the fire started, but so far the damage hasn’t been as bad as initially anticipated, so there should be enough food in the veld right now to support the wildlife without the need to feed them.

The park has a chopper in the air and bales of hay and water are on their way just in case.

The Mankwe hide is the only structure that has burnt down.

My Take

Mankwe burning down is pretty surprising. It is pretty much on the Mankwe dam, so you wouldn’t really expect to see it go down in flames.

I’ve been to the Pilanesberg a few times, and that has always been the best hide – particularly if you want pictures of kingfishers.
